To be recognized by the Brazilian government, a foreign must have an ID. Without this document you will not be able to perform basic tasks in the country, so find in this article how to obtain your RNE.

What is the RNE?

The RNE, Registro Nacional de Estrangeiros, is the documents that allows foreign citizens opening a bank account, buying a scholar pass or realizing any activity that requires the confirmation of prolonged stay in the country.

Obtaining an RNE can take approximately from six months to one year. It is important to underline that the register cannot be taken outside Brazil, once it is a document to prove that the foreign lives in the country.

Who needs a RNE?

Any foreign admitted in the country as temporary, permanent, under asylum or refugee must be registered in the country and recognized by the Justice Ministry. If the foreign will spend less than ninety days in Brazil, it is not necessary having a RNE.

After arriving in Brazil, foreign have thirty days to register themselves on the Federal Police, requesting their RNE. If this time pass and the person do not start the process, the bureaucracy makes getting an RNE a very complicated process.

Getting your RNE

Assuming that you fit all the requirements to get an RNE, we have made a step-by-step to simplify the process of getting the register.

1 – Guia de Recolhimento da União (GRU)

First of all, you will access the Federal Police website and fill the GRU (an online system for a payment form for the Brazilian government), as the example below. In “Unidade Arrecadadora” you must choose the one nearest where you live.

After filling all the items, click on “Gerar Guia” and print the Boleto Bancário of BRL 64.58.

After that, you will fill the GRU again, but now, making some changes. On “Código de Receita STN”, the code is 140120 instead of 140082. The new “boleto bancário” that you will print, is now of BRL 124.23.

Pick the two GRU “boleto bancário” and pay both in any bank agency.

2 - Going to Federal Police

After paying the GRU billets, you must to go to the Federal Police nearest of your house . You can find all the stations here.

There you must bring documents as:

  • 2 photos 3x4 on white background
  • Passport
  • DPF requirement completed (you get this on the Federal Police station)
  • Visa application form (you can request on the Brazilian embassy on country or in the Consulate of your country in Brazil)

The passport photos in Brazil are in a different size, so remember taking the photos in Brazil to avoid future problems.

After having your documents checked, the Police will scan your digitals and you will receive a receipt of your RNE, that can be used while the document is not ready. The process can take from six months to one year, so after doing the process, you only have to wait.

Going to the Federal Police can be a daunting task. It is important to know that they have a “dressing code”. You may not be served if you are dressing T-shirts dug, sandals or shorts.
