In Portuguese Workplace Accident Insurance is named Contribuição ao Seguro Acidente de Trabalho and often referred to by the abbreviation SAT.

SAT is the contribution to the Workplace Accident Insurance and it's collected as social security tax to cover expenses related to accidents at work and occupational sickness.

The standard rate is between 1% and 3% calculated based on the employee's compensation. However, companies that expose workers to potentially harmful work environments like chemical, biological and manufacturing factories are required to provide a greater contribution such as:

  • 6%, 9% or 12% for most companies.
  • 5%, 7% or 9% for services cooperatives calculated based on the invoice total.
  • 6%, 9% or 12% for production cooperatives on the total salary of the members.

The Workplace Accident Insurance is used to cover the extraordinary retirement. The additional rates of SAT can vary according to the risk classification of the company. The higher the risk, the greater the tax rate, but the Ministry of Social Security reduces rates for companies that invest in better workplace safety measures.
